Every summer, high school students from across the country travel to Washington, D.C. to participate in Citizenship Washington Focus (CWF), 4H's premier leadership and citizenship program for high school students. On July 7, 2018, three Ascension Parish 4-H'ers, Caitlin Marquis, Victoria Buckland, and Kinslei Scroggs, joined 11 other Louisiana 4-H'ers from 7 different parishes to board a flight to travel to the CWF Conference in Washington D.C. While waiting to board, excitement and nervousness filled the air. For some, it was the first time they would ever step foot on a plane, for others it would be the first time they have ever traveled to a big city!

The Louisiana delegation spent six full days in our Nation’s Capital. Throughout the week, 4-H'ers toured many historical monuments such as The Washington Monument, The National Cathedral, The 9/11 Memorial, and The Marine Corps Memorial. 4-H'ers were able to emerge themselves in the local culture by visiting several U.S.D.A. farmer markets and riding the public transportation system. The days were long, but jam-packed with fun, educational activities. An entire day was spent touring our nation’s capital and interviewing our state congressmen. 4-H'ers had an opportunity to bring up current issues affecting our community. Every 4-H'er participated in a bill writing workshop and community action planning for their own state. Our Louisiana 4-H'ers community action plan tackled the problem of obesity by creating a video to encourage healthy living. The Citizenship Washington Focus was an experience that was enjoyed by all three of these local 4-H'ers. 4-H has so many things to offer for the entire family. This once in a lifetime trip is just one great example of the opportunities Ascension Parish 4-H provide to our community.

The 2019 Citizenship Washington Focus event will be hosted in D.C. during the 4th of July to bring another exciting aspect to the trip!
