Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser was honored with the State Leadership Service Award. Nungesser received the award at the 15th annual Friends of the National Service Awards in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday night. He was among a national delegation of senators, representatives, mayors, state officials, and media to be recognized.

“I am deeply humbled and honored to receive the State Leadership Award from Voices for National Service,” said Lt. Governor Nungesser. “Commitment to service is one of our top priorities, and I am proud to preside over a service organization in Volunteer Louisiana, under the direction of Executive Director Judd Jeansonne who works tirelessly to help Louisiana residents and our surrounding areas. They help thousands every year. But this work couldn’t have been done alone. This award is for the people of Louisiana, who have gone beyond the call of duty during times of distress to help their neighbors here and across state lines.”

As lieutenant governor, Nungesser oversees volunteer efforts across the state including tutoring for struggling students through Homework Louisiana under the State Library and disaster response in the wake of hurricanes and floods. At the 2017 National Lieutenant Governors Association, Nungesser introduced a resolution that promotes national service as a critical federal, state, and local partnership that brings solutions to communities nationwide. He volunteered at various churches in the Baton Rouge area with relief efforts following the 2016 floods. He also took then-candidates Donald Trump and Mike Pence on a tour of flood damaged areas in the capitol region.

“Lt. Governor Nungesser has been a great champion of service in Louisiana and on the national stage,” said Volunteer Louisiana Executive Director Judd Jeansonne. “He knows first-hand the value of national service, especially in times of disaster, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved honor.”

“Congratulations to my friend Billy Nungesser,” said U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy. “As Lieutenant Governor, he’s done great work on behalf of the people of Louisiana, and this award is well-deserved. I know he’ll continue to demonstrate strong leadership as he serves our state and our country.”

Louisiana's U.S. Senators were also recognized at the event. Cassidy received the Distinguished Service Award, and U.S. Senator John Kennedy received the Outstanding New Member Award.
