Ascension Parish Assessor Mert Smiley is proud to announce and congratulate his Chief Deputy, Justin Champlin, for obtaining the professional designation of Assessment Administration Specialist (AAS) from the International Association of Assessing Officers (IAAO). The purpose of the AAS designation is to recognize professionalism and competency in administration of a variety of functions for property tax purposes. Justin becomes only the third person in Louisiana and one of 300 internationally to obtain such a designation thereby joining an elite group of mass appraisal and administrative professionals.

Justin has served as the Chief Deputy for the past five years. Since his arrival, he has been assisting Assessor Smiley in developing the vision of the Assessor’s Office, which is modern, efficient, and friendly, and played a major role for the office to obtain the prestigious IAAO Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Award and the annual GFOA Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting.

By Justin earning the IAAO Assessment Administration Specialist designation demonstrates our continued commitment to having a well-trained and knowledgeable workforce, which is essential for your Assessor’s Office to serve the public professionally and competently,” said Assessor Mert Smiley. “Justin is assisting me to develop your Assessor’s Office into one that provides fair and equitable assessments for all and provides useful information with transparency to the public.”

Prior to Justin joining the Assessor’s Office, he practiced as a title attorney, abstractor and title insurance agent. Justin also holds the designation of Certified Louisiana Deputy Assessor by the Louisiana Assessor's Association and is a member of the Louisiana State Bar Association, serves as President of the Industrial Development Board for the Parish of Ascension, and a member of the Government & Community Development Committee with the Ascension Chamber of Commerce.
