Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux speaks before the annual Christmas senior luncheon crowd at Lamar Dixon.

There was plenty of Christmas cheer to go around at the Senior Citizens Christmas Party in Gonzales. Hundreds of seniors filled tables at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, where a festive turkey dinner was served. Christmas music rang out in the hall, as Kenny Fife and Alan Gautreau played.

Attendees danced along to holiday classics. Even Parish President Kenny Matassa showed off his moves on the dance floor.

Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux said this event has been going on for decades, and the seniors look forward to it every year. The celebration is usually held in the Gonzales Civic Center, but due to ongoing renovations following the flood it had to be moved. Matassa said they knew they had to put on the event one way or another because they couldn't let the community go without this celebration.

The event is put on by the City of Gonzales, along with the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office and the parish government. Local elected officials put up the money to fund the meal. Door prizes were sponsored by the new Francois Bend Senior Living home.
