'Tis the season in Gonzales, and the holidays are underway with a series of festive events.

The first is the Holiday Express Train on December 2 at 4 p.m. Mayor Barney Arceneaux said Kansas City Southern comes through every few years with this event. He said three or four cars will roll down the track decked out in Christmas decorations. Children can walk through the interior and check out the decor and animations.

"It's a wonderful experience for the children," said Arceneaux.

The city puts on the free event in conjunction with the Gonzales Chamber of Commerce. There may even be live Christmas music for attendees to enjoy. Streets will be closed at Railroad and East Ascension, so make plans for parking ahead of time.

Another exciting event is the annual Christmas Tree Lighting on December 5 at City Hall. Arceneaux said the tree will be lit behind City Hall, and Santa will make an appearance at the amphitheater in Jambalaya Park. Cookies, hot cocoa, and jambalaya will also be served. The mayor said they will give that out until they run out. It's a family-friendly event that everyone is sure to enjoy.

"I'm happy to do it every year," said Arceneaux, "It's such a wonderful time to see the children all excited, and even some parents."

Coming up later in the season is the Annual Senior Citizen Christmas Party on December 12 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center. The event offers a wonderful meal and a gift for each senior who attends. There will be music, Santa, and lots of holiday cheer.
