In defense of the most basic drink in America, the Pumpkin Spice Latte

Fall is finally here! It's still 90 degrees outside and hotter than most place's summer, but it's here! And with it comes the best thing about the season, Pumpkin Spice Lattes.

Renown for being in the hand of a 20-something girl in leggings and UGGs, the Pumpkin Spice Latte is a foamy concoction of cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, vanilla, and, of course, pumpkin flavor with shots of espresso over milk. The seasonal drink's arrival at Starbucks is the truest sign there is that fall has officially begun.

PSLs, as they're also known, get a lot of hate as the classic staple of a "basic white girl." In early September, it's said the North American basic white girls awake from their long slumber in search of the festive beverage. The people who say that are known as haters. (Cue sassy hair flip.)

To say the pumpkin spice latte is phenomenal would be a huge understatement. I'm only slightly exaggerating when I say that drinking a PSL is like waking up to Ryan Gosling in your room, confessing his undying love for you with an armful of puppies.

As if I needed another reason to love fall - aside from the fabulous weather, leaves’ changing colors, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and football season - the PSL definitely puts the icing on the cake. I just can't understand why so many people throw shade on this wonderful drink. Because let's face it, it's downright delicious. (Unless you don't like pumpkin, in which case I don't understand you.)

Truly, it tastes like fall in a cup. It's sweet with a little kick of spice, so basically the coffee equivalent to pumpkin pie. Plus, it's coffee! And who doesn't love coffee? PSLs are here to comfort us as the days grow shorter and colder, and they're the best consolation prize there is for surviving the hectic holiday season. They're also a great way to get in the fall spirit when temperatures are still nearing triple digits.

I'd like to add that I have been known to enjoy this magnificent drink while wearing both leggings and UGGs because they're also fabulous. Leggings are like pajama pants that are (mostly) socially acceptable to wear in public, and UGGs are basically designer slippers. Did I mention they're lined with sheepskin? These shoes could not possibly be anymore comfortable than they are, though perhaps a tad on the "UGGly" side. Moral of the story, I am super comfy and well-caffeinated even if I look basic as all get out. There's clearly a reason all these 20-somethings are rocking this cozy, yet fashionable look throughout the season.

The Pumpkin Spice Latte made its Starbucks debut in 2003, and since then it seems like everything comes in pumpkin spice-flavored options. Probably because it's awesome and festive. While I can concede that perhaps we've taken it a bit too far with, I'm not even joking, pumpkin spice Pringles, pumpkin and caffeine are definitely a match made in Heaven.

In the beginning, I too was a hesitant to try my first PSL solely because everyone told me how overrated and "basic" they are. Well, those people were wrong. If you've been holding out for the same reason, trust me when I say your first PSL will change your life. So head to Starbucks, and bring on the fall because pumpkin spice is finally back in season.
