First Lady Donna Edwards has started her new statewide program, Virtual Visits with the First Lady.

I’m excited to begin interacting with students and teachers from around the state through these virtual visits,” said First Lady Edwards. “Technology is a helpful tool that is widely used in our schools, and because of it, I can spend time with the students reading a great book and taking their questions. Even if we can’t be together in person, we can still make a connection. As a former teacher, I am interested in the educational development of our young people and want our students to know that their futures are important to me and Governor Edwards. There are so many wonderful authors and artists from Louisiana, and this will be an opportunity for me to share their work, expose the children to our rich culture and enhance what they are learning in the classrooms.”

The first virtual visit was with Mrs. Karen Lowery’s and Ms. Lauren Battalora’s 4th grade class at Amite Elementary Magnet School. Mrs. Edwards read the book Bernice by Louisiana Author Patricia Reece and took several questions from the students.

Virtual Visits with the First Lady are a part of Mrs. Edwards’ education initiative, the Louisiana First Foundation. She’s dedicated to bringing more music, art and movement to schools throughout the state. Currently, the visits are available to grades K-6th grade with additional grades to be added in the future.
