GEISMAR – Shell Geismar recently presented Ascension Public Schools with a check for $35,000 to be used in flood recovery efforts, specifically for science and math education.

The company worked with the school district to identify costs associated with replacing lost lab equipment and furniture. Out of the $35,000 donation, $5,000 will go to St. Amant High to replace lost microscopes; $15,000 will go to Lake Elementary to replace lab tables in two classrooms; and $15,000 will go to Galvez Middle to replace lab tables in two classrooms.

"We continue to be blessed by our business and industry partners, who support our schools on the road to recovery," said Ascension Public Schools Superintendent David Alexander. "In addition to this targeted monetary donation, Shell Geismar donated over 100 pieces of office furniture to the district."

Shell Geismar recently found a perfect home for a hundred or so pieces of used but very serviceable office furniture left over after furnishing the construction trailers brought in for its Tiger AO-4 expansion project. Aware that several Ascension Parish schools had been devastated by the floods last August, and suspecting that the furniture could be put to good use in the many temporary buildings being set up to accommodate displaced Ascension Parish students, Shell contacted the Ascension Parish School Board and offered to donate the furniture.

The school system readily – and very appreciatively  –  accepted Shell’s timely offer, and sent a small convoy of trucks and trailers to the plant to make the pick-up of teacher’s desks, office chairs, filing cabinets and bookcases of all shapes and sizes. Shell was delighted that the furniture’s availability coincided with this critical need.
