The annual Tour du Rouge bicycle fundraiser commenced last week in Houston with over 50 riders raising awareness and money for the American Red Cross.

The six day, 573-mile-trip, began in Houston and ended in New Orleans. The course of the tour ran along the Gulf Coast, showing cyclists the recent devastation of floods and tornados that hit and damaged homes across the south.

Through this years event, $120,000 was raised to give back to the Red Cross to continue their efforts to help those in need.

First time Tour du Rouge cyclist, and Gonzales resident Tyrone Smith said he participated in the event because he believes in the work the Red Cross.

"My reason for doing this is strictly to support the Red Cross because of all the great work they do in the community," Smith said. "The moment there is a disaster ,be it nature or just a personal disaster, the Red Cross is the first one to come."
