Registration for Spring 2011 LSU leisure classes has begun

Staff reports

Members of the LSU and greater Baton Rouge communities can use their leisure time to discover a new craft, polish a skill or learn to play a sport or musical instrument without investing a lot of time or money. The Spring 2012 LSU Student Union Leisure Class brochure and registration form are now available online at

Included in the Spring 2012 LSU Student Union Leisure Class schedule are 120 non-credit, personal enrichment classes, with 21 new and exciting topics. Registration for all classes will continue until the class is full or until the class starts, whichever comes first.

Leisure Classes have something for everyone with classes in the following categories: calligraphy, clay, communication, culture and travel, dance, drawing and painting, fiber arts, fitness, health and sports, food and drink, games, glass crafts, home improvement, jewelry, landscaping and gardening, language, money, music, outdoors, paper crafts, personal growth, professional development, photography, woodcarving and woodworking, and writing.

"Boost Your Creativity" using the ancient Chinese system of Feng Shui or dissect your family and friends' personalities with our "Handwriting Analysis" class. Stay indoors and learn how to win your league with "Fantasy Baseball Preparation" or get outdoors and take the "Backpacking 101" class. Get your hands dirty in the newest bonsai class, "Bonsai: Repotting Workshop," or clean them up and take "Handmade Soaps" in the Student Union's own Arts Studio.

"Strength Training for Life," formerly known as "Be Strong, Live Long," and the ever-popular "Zumba" allow people of all ages to exercise, while "Laughter Yoga, Stress Less" or even "Aromatherapy & Essential Oils" help to de-stress the body. To work the brain, give the writing class, "Poetry for the Masses," or the language class, "Louisiana Creole," a try.

Those interested in giving their hands a workout can try out our new "Origami" classes. And long time participants will be excited to know that crochet and knitting classes have returned to the Union once again. Sign up for "Fiber Arts Survey" and explore the world of quilting, spinning and weaving plus more, and enjoy a tea lunch in the relaxed atmosphere of a historic home to boot.

In addition, Leisure Classes has also modified a few existing classes to meet the demands of our participants. Leisure Classes now offer two, new jewelry-making workshops that can be taken alone or in conjunction with the wire and metal jewelry-making classes. Take your skills to another level with "Watercolor Painting: Animals" or try out "Closet Art," a class designed to help create unique shirts, bags and shoes using just a little bit of paint. Take "One Stroke Painting: Fleur de Lis" with friends on a Saturday morning and create a beautiful piece of art featuring the pride of Louisiana, quickly and easily.

Classes are small and spaces fill up quickly so those interested in participating are encouraged to register early. Prices are reasonable and discounts are available to LSU students and Leisure Classes members.

Registration can be completed online or by phone, mail, fax and walk-in. Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover Card, personal checks and cash are accepted.
