Teen Open Mic

Calling musical teens for another great round of music and entertainment at the public library. Bring your acoustic guitar, keyboard, or whatever, and fifteen minutes of material to perform in front of a crowd. On Tuesday, Oct. 25, in Dutchtown, from 6:30 to 7:30, come listen and play in a supportive setting and have fun all at once. No registration is required, but time is limited. Readers Choice Awards

The State Library of Louisiana sponsors its annual Louisiana Young Reader’s Choice Awards (LYRC) this year and Ascension Parish Library has the books and ballots you need to vote for your favorite book. There is the 3rd through 5th grade ballot, the 6th through 8th grade one, and the new Louisiana Teen Reader’s Choice (LTRC) for 9th through 12th graders. That is right--Young Adults can now help find the favorite books for Louisiana Teens!

Voting at the library begins Nov. 1 and continues through Jan. 21, 2012. All of our locations have what you need, so come check them out and, if you have any questions, please call Donaldsonville at 473-8052, Dutchtown at 673-8699, Galvez at 622-3339, or Gonzales at 674-3955. Read for Louisiana!

Teen Japanese Culture Club

Like playing Gomoku, folding origami, discussing Anime and Manga, or writing haiku? How about learning about culture and history? These are some of the things you can be involved in at each meeting of Kokusaika. This month, our Teen Japanese Culture Club will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 2, at 3:30 p.m. in Gonzales, Thursday, Nov. 10, at 4 p.m. in Donaldsonville, and Thursday, Nov. 17, at 5 p.m. in Galvez.

ACT Practice Test

Don’t miss your opportunity to prepare for the ACT test at Ascension Parish Library! The library will administer a free practice ACT test on Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Gonzales location, courtesy of Princeton Review of Baton Rouge. The practice test starts at 9 a.m. and lasts approximately four hours. Space is limited, so registration is required and goes from Tuesday, Nov. 1 through Wednesday, Nov. 16. Those students interested should register online at www.princetonreview.com/events. Call Gonzales at 647-3955 if you have any questions. The Scores Back Session is where you receive your graded tests and can ask any questions you want. This is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 29, at 6 p.m. at the Gonzales location. Parents are encouraged to attend this session. Remember to bring your calculators to the test!    

Learn Make Great Desserts

The holiday season is upon us and families everywhere prepare to celebrate with special food treats! Top off this year’s annual feast with a dish that is sure to be a hit! Watch talented Chef Christina Nicosia and students from the Louisiana Culinary Institute demonstrate how to make some delicious desserts that will delight your family and friends! Holiday Delightful Desserts will show you how at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 6 p.m. Please register in advance by calling 647-3955.

Free Small Business Consulting

Ascension Parish Library offers free small business consulting on the second Monday of each month at the library in Galvez, 40300 Hwy. 42, Prairieville.  Persons wanting to start or improve a small business receive a private, two-hour consultation designed to provide professional help in areas of business planning, financing, marketing, and accounting.

This service is provided by the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southern University ñ Baton Rouge and is funded in part through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).  All services are free and confidential.  To schedule an appointment call the Louisiana Small Business Development Center at 225-922-0998.   

SCORE offers Free Counseling

Ascension Parish Library and SCORE ñ Baton Rouge offer free, on-site counseling in Ascension Parish for new business start-ups and mentoring for existing businesses.  Counseling sessions are held at two library locations each month by appointment: the first Tuesday morning and third Tuesday afternoon at the library in Gonzales and the second Wednesday morning and third Wednesday afternoon at the library in Dutchtown.

SCORE - Counselors to America’s Small Business, a nonprofit Association and a resource partner of the Small Business Administration, is dedicated to entrepreneur education and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide.

Counselors are active or retired business owners and executives with extensive experience, who follow the steps on “How to Start and Manage a Successful Business.”  This includes help on the Business Plan, Financial Forecast, Marketing & Sales, Legal and Accounting suggestions, Business Insurance needs, and the Bank Loan Package preparation.  SCORE counselors follow a strict code of ethics and confidentiality.

This year SCORE will begin expanding its education opportunities in the community for small businesses with a new QuickSTART Program and a stronger Community Alliance Program. These New Programs will help SCORE become even more valuable resource in our community.
