The Leadership Ascension group known as the “Wave Runnerz” recently held a 5K Run/Walk to benefit Project Kidz Kove. Bright and early, participants registered, received their free t-shirts and stretched in preparation for the 9:30 start. Families were able to enjoy an after party with major sponsor, Grainger, providing food as everyone enjoyed games, music and more. Over 170 adults and kids registered for the run/walk itself, and over 200 people attended the event.

“Anyone who has hosted a run/walk event before knows how much leg-work needs to be done prior to the event. Our group was worthy of the task, as after months of preparation and great support from the community, we were blessed to present PKK a check for over $30,000!” stated Cathy Waggenspack, on behalf of the Wave Runnerz. “It was very satisfying.”

Each year, Leadership Ascension breaks its class into several groups. Each group is responsible for finding or creating a project that will make a difference in the community. “The reason the “Wave Runnerz” chose PKK was we really liked the idea of a play park wherein children (brothers, sisters, friends) of all abilities play together (we don’t think people really realize how important that is to our children and their parents), we felt that we could really support an already great project for the parish and part of leadership IS the supporting of others, and it was (and it still is) our belief that PKK is a noble project for Leadership Ascension,” says Dannette Duplessis.  “We also wanted to start a project for PKK that provided an event with the ground work, to continue until the money has been raised.”

Universal Play is a real need in Ascension Parish, and the traditional playgrounds do not offer access or have the flexibility needed to accommodate children with physical or developmental impairments.  With great people and organizations like the “Wave Runnerz”, this park will soon be a reality in our community. With the minimum goal of $750,000, this outstanding support from these community leaders has pushed PKK to just over $300,000!!

Established in 2010, Project Kidz Kove is a not-for-profit organization in Ascension Parish, whose purpose is to raise funds to construct a playground for children of all abilities. The park will focus on additional equipment for children with physical or sensory developmental challenges with specialized equipment to facilitate their play experiences. Acreage for Kidz Kove Discovery Park was dedicated by the City of Gonzales, and once completed will be maintained by the City’s department of recreation.
