John Hammatt, Lindsey Hammatt, Joseph Landry, Viki-Dawn Landry, Nicholas Garon, and Ashley Reddicks reached the pinnacle as LSU champions during the 76th LSU AgCenter State Livestock Show Sunday, Feb. 13.

The day began early with the 4-H’ers preparing their birds for 8 a.m. judging. While the chickens were being judged, the annual poultry quiz bowl began in the other side of the exhibit hall. It was a hard fought battle with double elimination rounds that lasted for ninety minutes. Answering questions like, “what color egg does a Jersey Giant lay” in the final round team Ascension, Joseph Landry, Viki-Dawn Landry, and Ashley Reddicks , pulled away from the DeSoto Parish team to become the Louisiana Quiz bowl champions. Team Ascension won an all expense paid educational trip and will compete at the national poultry quiz bowl in Louisville, Kentucky in November 2011.

Back in the poultry exhibit the Ascension standard birds were outstanding. Lindsey Hammatt won Best Display for her overall exhibit of exotic Sumatras. Her Sumatra cock also took the Grand Champion of the All Other Breed class. John Hammatt’s beautiful black Australorps won both the Grand Champion and Reserve Champion of the English class. Nicholas Garon’s black standard Cochin was Grand Champion of the Asiatic class. Joseph, Matthew, and Viki-Dawn Landry exhibited bantam chickens and won best of variety and breed awards for their exhibits.

The 4-H’ers have shown their birds at the parish, district, and now the big state livestock shows. Ascension 4-H’ers in the poultry project prepare their exhibition birds with hard work and determination. Then the 4-H’ers prepare themselves with practice and study to present themselves to the judges in showmanship, quiz bowl, and premier exhibitor competitions.

Viki-Dawn Landry is the state winner intermediate division Poultry Showmanship with her light brown Leghorn. Matt Landry was second to his sister’s showmanship. Nicholas Garon placed third in junior division Showmanship. Joseph Landry was fourth in senior division Poultry Showmanship.  Viki-Dawn and Joseph will also be proving their poultry knowledge in the Poultry Premier Exhibitor competitions this week. Premier exhibitor looks for the most well rounded exhibitor with resume, essay, written test, hands on judging, showmanship, and interview competition.
