Market resumes in February

There will be no Art Gumbo Market at Houmas House for Jan.. The next scheduled market will be Feb. 19, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The Art Gumbo Market, presented by River Region Art Association, features the creative works of Louisiana artists and crafters from the surrounding communities.

The Art Gumbo Market is free and open to the public. Anyone interested in obtaining a booth, call Donna at 328-7354.   

Gonzales Rotary Food Festival slated

The 9th annual Gonzales Rotary Food Festival at the Gonzales Civic Center will be held Tuesday evening, March 29. Tickets are $20 per person and can be purchased at the Gonzales City Hall or any Gonzales Rotary member beginning Tuesday, Jan. 25.

Philippi Kids Mommies Day Out

Could you use an extra three hours for shopping, getting your nails done, or just taking a nap? Bring your children to “Philippi Kids Mommies Day Out” at Philippians Church, 13353 Hwy. 44, Gonzales, Saturday Jan. 22, from 3-6 p.m. The event is for children ages 3-12 years old. The event will host food, games and prizes. Pre-register at any Philippians Church service for a discount rate. Pre-registration is $5 per child, and at the door registration is $7 per child. Click Art Contest deadline

Get your cameras aimed and ready to shoot! River Region Art Associations hosting their annual “Click Art” contest for all the photographers both young and old. Take in for the photography will be Jan. 13, 14, and 15 from noon-4 p.m. at the RRAA Art Center in Gonzales. There is no entry fee. Three entries per person will be allowed. The categories are Adult Color; Adult Black & White; and Youth up to age 18. All photos must be framed for presentation with wire on the back for hanging.

Ribbons will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Honorable Mention. A reception will be held honoring the photographers Jan. 29 at 2 p.m. at the Art Center. All photography may be picked up at that time. All winners will be displayed at CC's Coffee House in Prairieville for the month of February.

Calling all ‘Creative Kids’

Calling all kids to draw and paint with “Miss Terry” at the River Region Art Center. Learn the tools, terms, and techniques of an artist. Classes will be held every Tuesday for ages 6-9 from 4:30-5:30 p.m. Classes for ages 10-13 will be held 5:30-6:30 p.m. also on Tuesdays. Supplies are furnished. Cost for four weeks is $65. Parish Financial Aid Workshops

The first Financial Aid Workshop will take place at Ascension Parish Public Library-Dutchtown Branch on Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. The second Financial Aid Workshop will take place at Dutchtown High School Cafetorium on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m..

The workshop is for Ascension Parish high school juniors, seniors and their parents. A representative from the Louisiana Office of Student Financial Assistance will assist you in completing the free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for all federal and state programs including TOPS. Also, loan officers from area banks will be available to give you information regarding student loans.

American Legion Wednesday bingo

The American Legion Post 81, 421 E. City, Gonzales, holds bingo every Wednesday night. Everyone is welcome. Children are welcome, but must buy at least a $5 book.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7:30 p.m.

Weekend VFW Post 3693 bingo

VFW Post 3693 offers bingo every Friday and Saturday. Everyone is welcome. Children six years and older are welcome, but must buy at least a $5 book.

Smoking cessation groups to meet

Smoking cessation groups will meet at the Ascension Counseling Center Tuesday, Jan. 18, from 5-6 p.m.

The center is located at 1112 South E. Ascension Complex Blvd., Gonzales (off Worthey Road, next to the Health Unit)

An ongoing group is held at 419 Memorial Dr, Donaldsonville (next to Prevost Hospital).

All adults are welcome to these free 8-week classes. The Nicotine patch will be supplied free to those who qualify. Participants will receive strategies for quitting and self-help material from a trained clinician.

The event is sponsored by Capital Area Human Services District and Ascension Counseling Center.

Mardi Gras Gala

The Ascension Fair Association will host a “2011 Mardi Gras Gala” Friday, Feb. 18 at 8 o’clock in the evening. The event, which is a semi-formal event and $25 per person, will be held at the Gonzales Recreation (Civic) Center, 219 St. Irma Blvd., Gonzales. CASA Volunteer Training

Child Advocacy Services’ Ascension Parish CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program is looking for volunteers to be the voice for children in the community who have been victims of abuse and/or neglect. CASA depends on volunteers to make a difference in the lives of these innocent children. Currently there are seven children in Ascension parish waiting for someone to be their voice.  Will you be the voice for one of these children?

CASA training for Ascension Parish volunteers will begin at 6 p.m. on Monday Feb. 7, at the Child Advocacy Services office located 1026 E. Worthey Rd., Suite C, Gonzales. St. Amant High class of 1991 reunion

The St. Amant High class of 1991 will host a 20-year reunion June 25, 2011, from 8 p.m. until midnight at the Grande Pavilion, Airline Hwy., Gonzales. The cost is $45 person payable by May 31. Quilt Guild meet every Thursday

The Cajun Country Quilt Guild meets the second Thursday of every month from 10 a.m. until noon at First Baptist Church on Burnside in Gonzales.

Friends of the Animals Baton Rouge is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization seeking to encourage and improve the humane treatment of animals at EBR Animal Control and Rescue by providing volunteers, resources, programs and education while increasing the number of animals adopted through fostering and partnerships. Looking for some entertainment this weekend? Check out the 4-H & FFA Pet Show, Stick Horse Rodeo and Livestock show this weekend at Lamar-Dixon.
