Public tour of Hansen’s Disease Museum set for April 25

Staff reports

A special public walking tour and documentary film viewing of the Hansen’s Disease Museum has been set for Saturday, April 25 from 2-4 p.m.

The free tour and film presents the experience of the Carville National Leprosarium, located on the eastside of Iberville Parish. Since 1894 patients, health care professionals, and the Daughters of Charity lived, worked, and made medical history there as they battled leprosy, which is also known as Hansen’s Disease. Many of the patients, some quarantined for life, left behind photos and memorabilia, telling their stories.

The walking tour is one and half miles, so visitors are requested to wear comfortable clothing and shoes. The tour is wheelchair accessible.
