Louisiana Bonsai Society to host events

Staff reports

At the monthly Louisiana Bonsai Society meeting, Feb. 17, the program was about re-potting bonsai presented by Kim Naquin. Howard Merrill demonstrated how to re-pot a Mimosa and Boxwood bonsai. Most bonsai need to be re-potted every two to five years depending on species and stage of development. Many species should be done in the spring for they bud out. Tropical bonsai should be done in May or June after hot weather here.

Lowell Tilley talked about the importance of planting the bonsai at the correct depth. The Annual Spring Bonsai show will be the at Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd, Saturday, April 18, and Sunday, April 19, from 11a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be a lecture/demonstration at 2 p.m. both days. Admission is free. The main objective of the show is the public how to enjoy the hobby of bonsai. The members usually have about 40 to 50 bonsai specimen on display and the Club has some bonsai to sale along with a bonsai raffle to raise money for programs.

The next monthly meeting will be Tuesday, March 17, 7p.m., Baton Rouge Garden Center, 7950 Independence Blvd.

The Louisiana Bonsai Society is a not for profit organization open to all that are interested in the hobby of bonsai. Guests are welcome, for more information, call Lowell Tilley at 272-6744.
