Upcoming health talk

Smith Chiropractic Clinic, 525 E. New River Ste. B, Gonzales, will host a free health talk  on  “Drugless Guide to Balancing Female Hormones” March 19 at noon.

Painting and drawing classes offered

“Painting and Drawing Through Experiment” will be presented at River Region Art Gallery with instructor, Terry Farrell, beginning March 3 from 6-8 p.m. The art classes will continue each Tuesday evening on March  10, 17, and 24.  This is a class for both beginners and the experienced to enjoy.  Fine art, folk art, and Abstract will all be explored. Check the Web site at www.artgumbo.org for class fees and supply details.  Most supplies are furnished. For more information, call the Gallery at 225-644-8496.

Cinderella Pageant set for March 7

A Cinderella Pageant will take place March 7 at 1 p.m. at Dutchtown High School.

The pageant is for ages: Infant division 0-11 months; Baby division 12-23 months; Tiny Tot division 24-35 months; Tot division 3-6 years; Miniature Miss division 7-9 years;  Miss division  10-12 years; Teen 13-17 years; and Woman division 18-26 years.

Benefit planned March 8 for Jeffrey VanSickel

A benefit has been planned March 8 for Jeff VanSickel, 45,  of French Settlement who was diagnosed with Stage 4 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

VanSickel is an instrument technician and has worked in the area for over 20 years. He is unable to work and has lost his insurance. He is receiving radiation and chemotherapy at Pennington Cancer Center in Baton Rouge.

Jeff and and his wife, Lori, have been married for 19 years and have four children, Brooke, 21, Brandon, 18, Bradley, 16, and Brennen, 2.

The benefit is being held at Ascension Civic Center Airline Hwy. Sorrento to help with transportation and living expenses.

The event will include live music, a space walk, garage sale, jambalaya, country store, sweet sale, auction, door prizes, raffle, poker run, antique photos, and snowballs.

Pilates classes offered

This non-impact workout class is being offered at no charge on Monday nights at 5:30 p.m. at the Celebration Center of the First United Methodist Church located at 224 W. Constitution St. Participants will need a Pilates or Yoga mat. Appropriate attire would be Yoga pants, Yoga capri pants, fitted shorts, or sweat pants. The nursery will be available for children 10 years old and under. All older children will be the responsibility of their parents. Call 225-647-4678 if child care is required or for any questions.

‘March into Art’ art show

It will soon be time to bring your art to River Region Art Gallery for the annual “March into Art” youth art contest. Take in for the artworks will be March 3-14. There are two divisions: ages 12-17 and  ages 11 and under. Youth may compete in four categories: painting (watercolor, acrylics, tempora), drawing (charcoal, colored pencils, pen & ink, markers), photography (black & white and color), and 3-dimensional (which includes papier mache', fabric art, wire, metal, wood, clay and collage.)

This is a judged show with cash prizes and ribbons awarded in each category by age divisions. See details online at www.artgumbo.org  or pick up an entry form at the Art Gallery located at 1835 N Magnolia in Gonzales. Prizes will be awarded at 3 p.m. at Children’s Creativity Day March 28 under the trees at River Region Art Gallery. The fun day for the kids will start at 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. with free art activities and door prizes. A reception will follow the awards at 3:30 p.m. The school with the most art entries will capture the Louisiana Art Spirit Award. 

Youth art classes at River Region Art Gallery

Youth art classes are being offered at the River Region Art Gallery in Gonzales.

Participants will draw and paint as well as learn fine art skills. All supplies included. Children ages 5-12 are welcomed. The opportunity is presented by River Region Art Association with Professional artist/artist for education.

Gonzales Garden Club to host mini ‘Flower Show’

The Gonzales Garden Club will hold a mini “Flower Show” at the St. Elizabeth Hospital on Highway 30 in Gonzales on March 4 at 10 a.m.-2 p.m. The public is invited and welcome to come see the different varieties of arrangements and designs of lowers.

Relay For Life set for May 1

Spanish cultures offered to school age children

School age children can experience Spanish cultures while developing foreign language skills. Students ages 4-14 are invited to participate in Casa de Amigos Schools Spanish Immersion Summer Camps June 1-5, June 8-12, July 13-17 from 9 a.m.-12.30 p.m. The event will feature Spanish songs, movies and popcorn, face painting, dancing and games, bubbles, arts and crafts, water sprinkler day, cooking and much more.

Camp cost is $75 per child and includes snacks, and Spanish CD.  Non-refundable deposit. Proof of Immunizations by May 1, 2009 is required.
