Film screening set at Ascension Parish Library

“A Lesson Before Dying” screens at the Ascension Parish Library in Gonzales Thursday, Feb. 26 at 6:30 p.m.

The 1999 film, based on the novel by Louisiana author, Ernest Gaines won two Emmys for Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing. 

The best-selling novel was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and won the coveted National Book Critics Circle Award. Set in 1940s Louisiana, the film stars Don Cheadle as Grant Wiggins, a young African-American who returns from college to teach in the one room plantation schoolhouse that he had known as a child.  His aunt, Tante Lou, (Cicely Tyson) convinces him to accept the educational challenge of his life; to persuade Jefferson, (Mekhi Feiffer) a young man unjustly convicted of murder and sentenced to die, to go to his death with true personal dignity despite the injustice done to him.
