‘Things I Love’ youth/adult exhibit

The community Theme Exhibit at River Region Art Gallery for February will be “Things I Love.”  This exhibit is open to all . . . both adults and youth, experienced or a beginner. Anyone may enter two free pieces of art. All art forms are welcome: paintings, drawings, photography, and 3-dimensional.  It can be art on canvas, paper, wood carvings, fabric art, jewelry, pottery, metal or wire art, papier mache', or sculptures.

With the theme “Things I Love”...it may be a favorite person, place, food, chocolate, action, sport, etc. Turn that idea into your original art form and bring to the River Region Art Gallery through Feb. 14. This show will be judged and ribbons awarded.

The Gallery, located on Magnolia Ave. behind Domino’s Pizza in Gonzales, is open from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. For more information, call 644-8496.

The show will remain on display until March 1.

Pen and ink drawing class Feb. 28

River Region Art Gallery in Gonzales will present a “Pen & Ink Drawing Class” featuring art instructor Louise Hansen. Class fee is $40 and a short supply list can be found online at www.artgumbo.org or call the Gallery at 644-8496. The workshop will be on Feb. 28 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. 

Hansen studied art at the University of Southern Mississippi and pursued a career in commercial art. Beginning as a graphic artist for Mississippi Engraving Company, she moved on as a fashion illustrator for Rubensteins in Shreveport and McRae’s in Jackson, Miss. and later as advertising manager for Gayfer’s in Jackson, Miss. She is now a retired graphics artist and fashion illustrator but is busy as an instructor teaching pen and ink drawing and watercolors. 

Youth are asked to enter ‘March into Art’

Calling all young artists. River Region Art Association is looking for the creative youth of the area to submit their artworks in its annual competition for “March into Art.” This art show involves all art forms, paintings, drawings, photography, and 3-dimensional art. There will be no specific subject, just do what you like.

There are two age groups, 12-17 years and 11 years and under. Entries will be accepted from March 3-14 at River Region Art Gallery in Gonzales. Entry fee is $1 per entry with a limit of two entries per category. 

Prize money and ribbons will be awarded to the winners in each category by age groups. Entry forms will be available at River Region Art Gallery located at 1835 N. Magnolia Ave. in Gonzales or online at www.artgumbo.org or call 644-8496. The Gallery is open Tuesday- Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. 

A Louisiana Art Spirit Award will be presented to the school with the most participation showing spirit for the arts. Last year, St. Theresa School received this award at “March into Art” 2008. At the “Awesome Art Show” in the fall of 2008, St. James Gifted Center captured the Louisiana Art Spirit Award.
