American Legion Veterans Appreciation Breakfast

The American Legion Gautreau/Williams Post 81 will sponsor a veterans appreciation banquet for all area veterans and their families Jan. 31. Breakfast will be served beginning at 8 a.m. “Come by and enjoy a free breakfast in the company of your fellow veterans,” said Joe Harris, Post 81 member.

Any veteran interested in becoming an American Legion member is asked to bring a copy of their DD-214 form.

AARP Tax-Aid Schedule

The AARP will provide assistance to tax payers in preparing their Federal and State tax returns. Help is available at the American Legion Post 81, 421 East City Park Ave., Gonzales.

The site will be open beginning Friday, Feb. 6 and continues each week on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 9 a.m.-11:30 a.m., through April 8. Proof of ID, such as drivers license, must be provided. Participants are asked to bring their 2007 tax return and documents such as W2 and 1099’s for the year 2008. Also, bring home insurance papers with the invoice, mortgage information for 2008, real estate tax bill, if any, and knowledge of the amount of stimulus payment received last year.

All this information is needed to determine if the participant qualifies for additional tax reductions due to recent changes in the tax laws. This community service is made possible by the AARP Foundation with the cooperation of the American Legion Post 81 and AARP Volunteers.

Donations needed for benefit garage sale

Currently accepting donations of garage sale and craft items, art from local artists and and any other unwanted items to benefit Jeffrey Van Sickel, a local cancer patient who is unable to work and has lost his medical insurance. Your unwanted things will be picked up for the benefit. For more pick-up or more information, call Lori at 573-4003.

RRAA offers Pen and Ink Drawing Class

River Region Art Gallery in Gonzales will present a “Pen & Ink Drawing Class” featuring art instructor Louise Hansen. Class fee is $40 and a short supply list can be found online at www.artgumbo.org or call the Gallery at 644-8496. The workshop will be on Feb. 28 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
