Christian Men's Luncheon
All men are invited to join the United Methodist Men in a fellowship luncheon Wednesday, Jan. 14 at noon. The meeting will be held at the Country Kitchen restaurant, 615 E. Ascension St. in Gonzales. This is a regional activity and you do not need to be a member to attend.
Ascension Parish 4-H Livestock Show starts Thursday
The Ascension Parish 4-H Junior Livestock Show will be Jan. 15-17. Pet Show registration is Thursday at 6 p.m., and the show is at 6:30 p.m. The Swine Showmanship is at Friday at 6 p.m. Dairy, Poultry, Market Hog, Market Lamb, Market Goats and Breeding Shows will be Saturday at 9 a.m. The show will be in the 4-H Building and Arena B.
Memorial for Larry Sanders Thursday
A memorial will be held Thursday, Jan. 15 for the late Larry Sanders who passed away Thursday, Jan. 8 at age 62. The memorial, which will include a fish fry, will be held from 5 p.m. until at The Red Barn Bar, 43256 Moody Dixon Road, Gonzales. For more information, call 622-6501.
South Louisiana Wedding Expo Sunday
The South Louisiana Wedding Expo will be Sunday, Jan. 18, from 1-4 p.m. at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, Trade Mart A and B. Admission is $10 at the door, $8 if registered online at theweddingmarket.com.
Johnson to hold HIV/AIDS introductory meeting
HIV and AIDS affect people in all communities, and Ascension Parish has its share of residents fighting the viruses.
Ascension Parish AIDS Coalition, or APAC, is an alliance of community-based service providers, faith-based organizations, and other individuals who meet to discuss ways to provide effective HIV/AIDS information and services to the community.
Women account for more than one quarter of all new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. A total of 14,917 persons were reported living with HIV/AIDS in Louisiana, according to the 2006 Louisiana HIV/AIDS annual report.
HIV affects us all in some way. Many are afraid to talk about the virus and there are some who don’t realize the problem exists here in the Ascension Parish area.
Gabrielle Johnson, CEO of Face to Face Enrichment Center in Gonzales, will hold an introductory meeting Saturday, Jan. 17 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Face to Face Enrichment Center at 1026 E. Worthey Rd., Suite F, Gonzales. To confirm attendance, call 225-644-9992.
The requirements to join APAC include: maintain strict confidentiality, attend regular meetings, be at least 18 years old, and have a passion for helping others.
United Methodist Men’s Breakfast
The monthly breakfast and fellowship of the First United Methodist Men will be held in the Celebration Center of the church, 224 W. Constitution, Gonzales, on Sunday, Jan. 18 at a.m. All interested men are invited to attend.
The Ascension Parish Library will be closed Monday, Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Effective Parenting classes
Gonzales Primary School will host Effective Parenting classes. Friday Morning Classes will be Jan. 23-March 13, from 9-11 a.m. and Tuesday Evenings Classes will be Jan. 13-March 10, from 5:30-7:30 p.m.
48 hour film fest casting call

CASA in need of
The Ascension Parish CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program needs volunteers to be the voice for innocent children who are victims of abuse and neglect. CASA depends on volunteers from the community to make a difference. The only requirements are that you have an interest in speaking up for a child, must be at least 21 years old and the ability to invest 1-2 hours a week advocating for an abused child.

Parish to recycle Christmas trees
Ascension Parish government will be accepting Christmas trees for recycling throughout the month of January.
All parish residents can bring their trees to the Ascension Civic Center on Airline Hwy. in Sorrento from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Saturday, Jan. 5 through Jan. 31.
Only trees without ornaments, lights or decorations can be recycled.
