Ascension Parish Tourism Commission Director, Tracy Browning, was the guest speaker at the Gonzales Rotary Club's meeting held on July 23. Brown gave a brief history of the tourism commission and explained how the commission is funded by a two percent hotel/motel occupancy tax. Browning said that 2012 was record year for tourism in Louisiana and that the last available statistics showed that Ascension Parish ranked 17th in the state for money spent by tourists. She also noted that, in addition to its work with the Gumbo Group, a 10-parish consortium of tourism bureaus, the Ascension Parish Tourism Commission just revamped its website, tourascension.com, to better represent the many, many places, events, and activities that Ascension Parish has to offer. She also outlined the commission's efforts at advertising.
