ACT extends pre-season discount prices for 2015 Season tickets

The Ascension Community Theatre has extended its pre-season discount prices for 2015 Season tickets until the opening of the first show this season, “A Doll’s House,” by Henrik Ibsen.

Use the seating chart for a full year of quality theatre and grab season tickets for less than $45. The show opens on Feb. 26.

Shekinah Glory Christian Fellowship Church Prayer Brunch

Shekinah Glory Christian Fellowship Church is hosting a Prayer Brunch at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7 at the church, 10164 North Line Street, St. James. The guest speaker will be First Lady Angie Armstead of Kingdom Tabernacle of Donaldsonville. Donation $10.

Chili & Corn Bread Cook-off benefiting ‘Dreams Come True Foundation’

There will be a Chili & Corn Bread Cook-off benefiting “Dreams Come True Foundation” at the Hole in da Wall Seafood on Saturday, Feb. 21.

“Breakout that old recipe and come have a good time for a great cause, stated coordinator, Rodney Dupry.

Chili - Cooks can start at 8 a.m. and have their chili ready for judging at 12 noon. You must cook a minimum of three gallons. Entry fee is $50.

All cooking to be done on location.

Cornbread - Cooks can prepare their dish at home and must turn in entry by 11 a.m. for judging. Cornbread must be cooked in a 10 inch skillet or 9' x 11” pan. Entry fee is $20. You can get really creative with your cornbread!

Food will be sold to the public, 3 bowls for $10. All proceeds will go to the “Dreams Come True Foundation”. Trophies will be given to the top 3 cooks in each category. Cajun Country Quilt Guild

American Legion Post 81 Wednesday Bingo

The American Legion Post 81, 421 E. City, Gonzales, holds bingo every Wednesday night. Everyone is welcome. Children are welcome, but must buy at least a $5 book.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7:30 p.m.

VFW Post 3693 Weekend Bingo

VFW Post 3693, bingo Friday and Saturday nights. Children six years and older are welcome, must buy at least a $5 book. Doors open at 6 p.m., bingo starts at 7:30 p.m., located at 42430 Church Point Rd., Gonzales.

Free Income Tax Preparation

The AARP Taxaide Program will provide free tax assistance for federal and state income tax filers at American Legion Post 81, 421 East City Park Avenue, Gonzales. The tax counselors will begin assisting filers each Wednesday and Friday between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. through April 10. The site will be closed on Good Friday, April 3.

Filers must bring proof of ID, Social Security cards, last year’s tax return and 2014 tax documents, such as W2 and 1099 forms, other income information, home insurance papers, home mortgage statements and real estate tax information.

This assistance is made possible by AARP, American Legion Post 81, and AARP volunteers.

Spectacular Dancing Divas’ Sweetheart Dance

Parents and children (ages 2-15) are invited to attend Spectacular Dancing Divas’ Sweetheart Dance on, Saturday, Feb. 7 at The Geismar Community Center. The dance will last from 6 - 10 pm.

There will be special guest performance including Demi Lavato’s “Frozen” by Thalan Broussard, Sam Smith’s “Stay With Me” by Jovin Webb ,“Grateful” by Artist Renaldo Price and last, but not least, The Dream Team.

Jerry Carter from Louisiana Healthcare Connections will speak briefly on Anti-Bullying.

There will also be light refreshments and special prize giveaways. Everything is free of charge so come out and have a great time.

Upward Soccer 2015 begins

Dawn Shivers Memorial Scholarship fund

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley established a scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors in honor of Dawn Shivers, a retired employee of the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office. She passed away in May 2013 fighting a long battle with cancer. This year will be the second year for the scholarship fund.

Shivers started her career with the Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office in 1998 as a correctional officer at the Ascension Parish Jail. In March of 2011 she joined the Inmate Programs Division in the jail to provide support to the instructors and tutored students in the GED/ Literacy program. Her interactions with the inmates were always encouraging and positive.

The Dawn Shivers Memorial scholarship will continue to honor one of Ascension Parish Sheriff’s finest.

Gonzales Memorial VFW Post 3693 in search of men and ladies to join

The Gonzales Memorial VFW Post 3693 is looking for a “few good men and women” to join in serving their local veteran community. The VFW is the largest veteran organization and committed to serving veterans which have become the smallest population in the United States.
