Cameron’s Crew presents Family Fun Day

Cameron’s Crew will presents a “Family Fun Day,” from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6 at the American Legion Hall, 421 E. City Park St., Gonzales. The fundraiser will being held for Cameron Higgins, a 7-year-old resident of Prairieville, who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. She is currently seeking treatment at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The day includes:

• Jambalaya Cook-Off with plates available at 11 a.m. for a $7 donation

• Live Auction: antiques, art and more starting at 11 a.m.

• Entertainment by Stonewall Broussard

• Kids Activities

• Face Painting

• Crafts

• Concessions

AARP Chapter 1449 Food Drive

The Gonzales Area Chapter 1449 AARP will host a “Food Drive,” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Walmart, 308 N. Airline Hwy., Gonzales. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the St. Theresa’s Food Bank.

Hog Crackling Cook Off

Who: Poche Plantation 1st Annual Arts & Craft Show

What: Featuring a Hog Crackling Cook Off

When: Saturday morning, October 25th

Where: Poche Plantation in Convent

How: Cooks are required to cook at least 50 pounds of fat. The finished product can contain meat or can be meatless. This is a choice made by the cook. Additionally, cooks may choose salt only or may choose seasonings of their choice. Contestants are required to furnish their own cooking equipment and accessories.

Why: There is a $20 entrance and all money raised will go into a charity fund established by the Arts & Craft Show Planning Committee.

Second Annual Black Iron Pot Cook-off

The Second Annual Black Iron Pot Cook-off will take place Saturday, Sept. 20 at Galvez Hardware and Outdoor Cooking on Hwy., 42. Galvez. The event will benefit “Dreams Come True Foundation.”

Cook your best recipe for judging:

• $50.00 Entry fee

• Must cook at least three gallons.

• Food will be sold to the public.

• Cooks arrive at 7:30 A.M.

• Food must be turned in at 11:30 A.M.

• Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top 3 cooks.

• Deadline to sign up is Sept. 17

St. Vincent de Paul thrift store

St. Vincent de Paul thrift store is at 1402 North Burnside Street, Unit 7, in Gonzales. In back of Auto Zone.

Individuals interested in making donations of clothing, furniture, and household items are encouraged to do so by dropping them off at the 1402 N. Burnside location. Individuals are encouraged to volunteer their time in helping the society to be successful in their charitable mission. Anyone wishing to volunteer at this location can call (225) 644-2151 for more information. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Gonzales Fraternal Order of Police, Jambalaya Lodge 16 4th Annual Golf Tournament

The Gonzales Fraternal Order of Police, Jambalaya Lodge 16, will hold its 4th Annual Golf Tournament at Pelican Point on Sept. 29, at the Lakes Course. This fundraising event will help us to support FOP charities such as Christmas for Kids, Easter Seals and many other activities put on by the Lodge. The golf tournament will be providing food and drinks for all competitors and sponsors. Prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners as well as closest to the hole and longest drive will be awarded. The FOP Lodge 16 is also seeking donations, which will be used to help defray the cost of this event. If you would like to make a monetary donation, mail them to P.O. Box 808 Gonzales, La. 70707 (Attention: Randy Clouatre). The FOP is a non-profit organization and in Gonzales is comprised of the Officers in the Gonzales City Police Department.

Awesome Art on the Bayou Festival

Awesome Art on the Bayou Festival is coming to Gonzales on Oct. 11 and 12.

The festival will include an art exhibit competition with cash prizes, and children’s activities. Awesome Art is held on the banks of Bayou Francois in Gonzales adjacent to Jambalaya Park. It is open to the public with free admission and free parking

River Region Art Association (RRAA) is “Calling for Vendors” and is accepting vendor applications to participate in this Festival. Vendor booth categories are arts and crafts, literary, non-profit and food.

Featured also in the Festival is a non-juried Art Exhibit that promotes the art work of children, youths and adults. The rewards are ribbons and monitory prizes for winners and art sales if the artists wish. Art accepted can be in all mediums (painting, photography, and three dimensional arts).

The deadline for submitting Booth Applications is Sept. 1. The booth fee is $100 for art and craft vendors with discounts for literary booths, non-profits and RRAA members. Applications for entering pieces in the art show can also be found on-line or by contacting Diane Tygier at rtygier@cox.net. Entry fees for Adults are $10 for one or $25 for three and for Students are $5 for entrance or $12 for three. Prizes for Adults are $150 for 1st place, $50 for 2nd, and 3rd and honorable mention receive ribbons. For Youth 12 - 17, 1st prize is $50, and 2nd place is $30. Ages 6-11 receive $30 for 1st and 20 for 2nd.

Fellowship Center needs donations

The Fellowship Center, located at 813 S. Bumside-next to EATEL, is in need of all donations (especially men's clothing). The store is manned by volunteers from local churches and civic organizations, as well as a few paid employees. It is a retail store selling a large assortment of household items and clothing. All of the money, made in the store, is used to help those in need here in the Gonzales area. Participants are asked to donate any used and/or new items. Also participants can shop the Center. Hours of operation are Monday-Saturday, from 9 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Donations accepted: Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m. and Saturday, from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m. (There is a large window in the back of the building where donations are accepted.)

Tuesday and Sunday Bingo

The St. Amant Knights of Columbus holds bingo two nights a week. On Tuesday, the doors open at 6 p.m. and bingo begins at 7:30. On Sunday afternoon the doors open at 4 p.m. and bingo begins at 5 p.m. No one under the age of 18 is allowed.

Everyone is invited to come. On the last Tuesday of each month free jambalaya is served to the players. The St. Amant Knights of Columbus Hall is located at 43472 Black Bayou Road. 

Wednesday Bingo

The American Legion Post 81, 421 E. City, Gonzales, holds bingo every Wednesday night. Everyone is welcome. Children are welcome, but must buy at least a $5 book.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7:30 p.m.

Weekend Bingo

VFW Post 3693, bingo Friday and Saturday nights. Children six years and older are welcome, must buy at least a $5 book. Doors open at 6 p.m., bingo starts at 7:30 p.m., located at 42430 Church Point Rd., Gonzales.

StashBuilder’s Quilt Guild meets

StashBuilder’s Quilt Guild meets at 7 p.m. on the fourth Monday of the month at St. James Lutheran Church, 1415 E Hwy. 30, in Gonzales. Both new and experienced quilters are invited to attend. Call 225-936-2238 for more information.
