Ascension Parish Governmental Offices to close for Labor Day

All Ascension Parish governmental offices and departments will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 in observance of Labor Day.

All parish government offices will resume normal business hours on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Library Closings

The Ascension Parish Library will be closed Monday, Sept. 1 for Labor Day.

Benefit to be held for George Parker

Robert Smith, Jr. from New Bethel Baptist Church of Detroit, Michigan will speak at Emmanuel Baptist Church, Hwy. 1 South in Donaldsonville on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 7 p.m. and Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 808 St. Patrick St. in Donaldsonville on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. Pastored by Rev. Charles Brown and Rev. Darryl Smith, respectively. These church services are to benefit George Parker who has health issues. Everyone is invited to attend these special programs.

Cameron’s Crew presents Family Fun Day

Cameron’s Crew will presents a “Family Fun Day,” from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6 at the American Legion Hall, 421 E. City Park St., Gonzales. The fundraiser will being held for Cameron Higgins, a 7-year-old resident of Prairieville, who was recently diagnosed with Leukemia. She is currently seeking treatment at St. Jude Children's Hospital in Memphis, Tenn.

The day includes:

• Jambalaya Cook-Off with plates available at 11 a.m. for a $7 donation

• Live Auction: antiques, art and more starting at 11 a.m.

• Entertainment by Stonewall Broussard

• Kids Activities

• Face Painting

• Crafts

• Concessions

AARP Chapter 1449 Food Drive

The Gonzales Area Chapter 1449 AARP will host a “Food Drive,” from 10 a.m.-2 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 11 at the Walmart, 308 N. Airline Hwy., Gonzales. Non-perishable food items will be collected for the St. Theresa’s Food Bank.

Hog Crackling Cook Off

Who: Poche Plantation 1st Annual Arts & Craft Show

What: Featuring a Hog Crackling Cook Off

When: Saturday morning, October 25th

Where: Poche Plantation in Convent

How: Cooks are required to cook at least 50 pounds of fat. The finished product can contain meat or can be meatless. This is a choice made by the cook. Additionally, cooks may choose salt only or may choose seasonings of their choice. Contestants are required to furnish their own cooking equipment and accessories.

Why: There is a $20 entrance and all money raised will go into a charity fund established by the Arts & Craft Show Planning Committee.

Second Annual Black Iron Pot Cook-off

The Second Annual Black Iron Pot Cook-off will take place Saturday, Sept. 20 at Galvez Hardware and Outdoor Cooking on Hwy., 42. Galvez. The event will benefit “Dreams Come True Foundation.”

Cook your best recipe for judging:

• $50.00 Entry fee

• Must cook at least three gallons.

• Food will be sold to the public.

• Cooks arrive at 7:30 A.M.

• Food must be turned in at 11:30 A.M.

• Cash prizes and trophies will be awarded to the top 3 cooks.

• Sign up at Galvez Hardware

• Deadline to sign up is Sept. 17

Tuesday and Sunday Bingo

The St. Amant Knights of Columbus holds bingo two nights a week. On Tuesday, the doors open at 6 p.m. and bingo begins at 7:30. On Sunday afternoon the doors open at 4 p.m. and bingo begins at 5 p.m. No one under the age of 18 is allowed.

Everyone is invited to come. On the last Tuesday of each month free jambalaya is served to the players. The St. Amant Knights of Columbus Hall is located at 43472 Black Bayou Road. 

Wednesday Bingo

The American Legion Post 81, 421 E. City, Gonzales, holds bingo every Wednesday night. Everyone is welcome. Children are welcome, but must buy at least a $5 book.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and bingo starts at 7:30 p.m.

Weekend Bingo

VFW Post 3693, bingo Friday and Saturday nights. Children six years and older are welcome, must buy at least a $5 book. Doors open at 6 p.m., bingo starts at 7:30 p.m., located at 42430 Church Point Rd., Gonzales.


Take Off Pounds Sensibly LA 422 Prairieville meets on Thursday evenings. Private TOPS weigh-ins are from 5:30-6 p.m. and meetings are from 6-7 p.m. Visitors are welcome to attend their first TOPS meeting free of charge. To find out more information about TOPS, call 313-3180.
