Yellow Jacket Bar-B-Que Throwdown seeks participants for BBQ contest, Student Q, craft show and car show.
The Yellow Jacket Bar-B-Que Throwdown will be held on Jan. 19, on the grounds on Denham Springs High School. Events include an International Bar-B-Que Cookers Association sanctioned Bar-B-Que contest, a kid's bar-b-que contest (Student Q), a craft show, and car show. The Throwdown Committee would like to invite individuals, groups, and businesses to participant in the various events. The Yellow Jacket Throwdown benefits the DSHS Lady Jacket Softball Team, the DSHS 4-H Club, and DSHS ProStart (A Culinary Arts and Restaurant Management Program).
In the I.B.C.A. sanctioned BBQ contest, teams from across the state will compete for $3000 worth in prize money. Teams will consist of one head cook and up to 4 team members. Pits can be commercial or homemade, however, no open pits are allowed. Fires must be wood or charcoal. Pits may include gas or electricity to start the natural substances, but not to compete cooking. Any and all meat and/or meats that may be entered into judging will be cooked from scratch within the constraints of the event. Pre-cooking, marinating, etc. will not be allowed prior to meat inspection at check-in on Friday. In this three meat competition, teams will cook and turn-in 7 full slices of brisket, 7 individual bone-in pork spare ribs, and ? chicken (fully jointed split). Entry fee for the three-meat competition is $150. Livingston Parish residents can participate in the chicken and ribs division for $50 per category. If Livingston Parish teams would like to be considered for Grand/Reserve Champion awards, teams must compete in the three-meat competition. Additional contest include: A Cook's Choice Breakfast entrée (entry fee $25) and Ultimate Sauce contest (entry fee $15). The turn-in for these contests will be Saturday morning.
The Student Q invites any student, regardless of residence, to prepare, cook, and turn-in 6 chicken thighs. The entry fee for this contest is $20. Students will be divided into three divisions: Elementary (ages 6-10), Jr. High (ages 11-13), and High School (ages 14-18). Parents may help with starting/controlling the fire, while student are to do the rest. Awards will recognize the top ten in each division.
The Throwdown Committee is also seeking craft/merchandise vendors as well as car show participates. The craft show will be held in the Hornsby Gym. The car show will be stationed along Yellow Jacket Blvd. A variety of food booths will also be available.
