Pair represents Ascension at Tenn. cookoff

“Tee” Wayne Abshire and Brian Lipps, who go by the name Tee Wayne’s Smokin’ Lipps, represented Louisiana and Ascension Parish at the 21st Jack Daniel’s Invitational World Championship BBQ Contest in Lynchburg, Tenn.

“Tee” Wayne Abshire and Brian Lipps, also known as Tee Wayne’s Smokin’ Lipps, represented the Louisiana Office of Tourism and the Parish of Ascension at the 21st Jack Daniel’s Invitational World Championship BBQ Contest. 

The invitational is known as an extreme honor in the BBQ world, Abshire said.

It was held Oct. 22-25 in Lynchburg, Tenn. They were the only team from Louisiana to be invited to compete in the event, which consisted of 80 teams. 

Abshire and Lipps, making their second appearance at “The Jack” and their third in a BBQ competition, finished fourth overall.    

The Memphis BBQ Network and the Food Network both filmed the event.

According to Nielsen Media Research, the Food Network has become the second most-requested cable channel in the country. The network is in 96 million homes with its key demographic being ages 25-54.

The Memphis BBQ Network has thousands of followers who are connected to Louisiana not only because of proximity, but also through the shared love of food and music. 

Coverage dates have not yet been announced by the two channels.

About 20,000 went through the contest site in which the Louisiana Office of Tourism and Ascension Parish displayed signs. The team wore hats, shirts and aprons with Louisiana and Ascension Parish logos, and distributed promotional items that were provided by the Office of Tourism and the parish.
