End of summer Lorax party at Ascension Parish Library

ANITA YOUNG Ascension Parish Library

Celebrate the end of a fabulously fun summer at the Ascension Parish Library with our “End of Summer Lorax Party.” We’ll make marvelous mustaches and paint pretty truffula trees. You’ll also plant a flower seed to take home and take care of. Lorax Parties are open to all ages, and will be held on Monday, July 22 at 2 p.m. in Dutchtown, on Wednesday, July 24 at 2 p.m. in Donaldsonville. For more information, or to register, please call or stop by any Ascension Parish Library location.

If you love telling jokes and aren’t afraid of getting up in front of an audience, then join us at the Ascension Parish Library for our very first “Kid’s Comedy Hour.” It’s simple, if you have a hilarious joke to tell, all you have to do is get in line and wait your turn to tell it. Each kid will get three minutes to be the star of the show and make us laugh ourselves silly. This program is open to children ages three through twelve and their families. Jokes must be squeaky-clean. All jokes will be applauded and booing will not be allowed. Kid’s Comedy Hours will be held on Monday, July 22 in Gonzales, and on Thursday, July 25 in Galvez. All programs will begin at 6:30 p.m. For more information, or to register, please call or stop by any Ascension Parish Library location.

The fun’s not over for our tweens. This week, we are holding our last tween program of the summer, Steampunk Owls in Galvez. During this program, you will use an assortment of recycled materials, nuts, and bolts to create an owl with steampunk flair. Steampunk Owls is open to all children entering 4th through 8th grade and is scheduled for Monday, July 22 at 4:00 p.m.

It’s not too late to sign up for the “Dig Into Reading” summer reading program when you stop in to participate in any of these events. Children from birth through eighth grade are eligible to join our reading program. Studies show that children who read at least ten minutes per day during the summer are more likely to retain and improve the reading skills learned during the recent school year. Parish children who join the reading program can track their reading by minutes read to earn prizes. Any child who is registered for the reading program can complete it by reading 100 minutes during the months of June and July. All children who complete the reading program will receive a blue 2013 “Dig Into Reading” book bag.
