The public is invited to an art-filled holiday season with River Region Art Association. On Friday, Dec, 6 from 11 a.m.–7 p.m. is a “Holiday Open House” at the association’s Depot Gallery. Everyone is invited to come by for refreshments and to take advantage of special discounts offered on selected items.

On Sunday, Dec. 8 from 3–5 p.m., a Basic Bead Jewelry Making Workshop will be conducted at the Depot Gallery. Ideal for beginners, teens, and pre-teens, the fee is $20 and supplies are included. Workshop registration forms are available at the Depot Gallery or contact workshop instructor Margaret Lee at (225) 347-3547 or louisianalee@eatel.net.

During the entire month of December, a Santa’s Shop is set up inside the Depot Gallery. Here one can find hundreds of art and craft items created by local artists. All items are affordably priced at $25 or under.

River Region Art Association operates two art galleries showcasing member artwork year-round. The Depot Gallery serves as the association’s primary location for its art gallery, workshops, classes, meetings, receptions, resource library, and office space. It is housed in the historic city-owned Edenborn Railway Depot built in Gonzales in 1906.

The Depot Gallery hours are 11 a.m.–5 p.m. Wednesdays - Sundays. It is located at 1008 W. Hwy. 30 in Gonzales, which is across the highway from St. Elizabeth's Hospital.

The Art Gallery at Houmas House is a secondary gallery of the association. Open daily from 10 a.m.–5 p.m., it is located in the Houmas House Plantation Gift Shop at 40136 Hwy. 932 (River Road) in Darrow.

On display at both galleries are oil and acrylic paintings, watercolors, drawings, photography, digital art, jewelry, pottery, crafts, and affordable cards and prints -- all created by members of the association. The galleries are staffed by volunteer docents.

The River Region Art Association, founded in 1993, is the area’s leading regional art organization. Its mission is to bring artists and arts advocates together to improve public awareness of all art forms. The association supports local artists, promotes the arts in the community, and provides educational opportunities for emerging and established artists, students, and the general public.

River Region Art Association is funded in part through the generosity of individuals and area businesses, and the Recreation Department of the Parish of Ascension and through in-kind support from the City of Gonzales and Houmas House Plantation. It is also supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council as administered by the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.
