Musculoskeletal Oncology Clinic first in Louisiana
Announced by Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center on December 17, the new Musculoskeletal Oncology Clinic is now open.
The clinic will be focusing on treating patients with tumors of the soft tissue, muscles, and bones. This is the first clinic of its kind in Louisiana.
Soft tissue, bony, and retroperitoneal sarcomas are rare cancers, which originate in bone and connective tissues, that will be treated at the clinic.
The Cancer Center has a multidisciplinary sarcoma treatment team that will develop individual care plans based on a patients case. The team includes a surgical oncologist, orthopedic oncologist, medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, radiologists, pathologists, nurses, and social workers.
Dr. John Lyons is a surgical oncologist trained at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and will be one of the lead experts at the clinic. Dr. Shaun Accardo, orthopedic oncologist who trained at Moffit Cancer Center, will also be a lead expert at the clinic. Dr. Lyons and Dr. Accardo have a mission to combat sarcoma in bones and soft tissues. Dr. Accardo is one, of only two, orthopedic oncologists in the state of Louisiana. He is also one of a few who specializes in treating these diseases.
"Having this resource in Baton Rouge will enable patients to stay local for treatment while receiving excellent care comparable to that received at the biggest cancer centers in the country," Dr. Lyons said.
"There are more than eighty different subtypes of soft tissue sarcoma-like growths," Dr. Accardo said. "Identifying the tumor type and an accurate diagnosis is the first essential step in management. They require a combination of treatments, so having multiple experts house in one location makes us more efficient."
The clinic is located on the first floor of Mary Bird Perkins–Our Lady of the Lake Cancer Center, at 4950 Essen Lane in Baton Rouge. Appointments can be made by calling 225-769-5656.
