Gonzales Garden Club 2018-19 season begins

GGC members brought cuttings of blooming plants from their gardens, labeled for identification.

The Gonzales Garden Club held the first meeting of its 2018-19 season at Patti Mouton’s home. This was a departure from a 32-year tradition of Lorraine Gautreau hosting the kickoff meeting, but in keeping with that tradition, Rick Mouton cooked a perfect pot of jambalaya for the crowd of ladies. Hostesses added white beans, tossed salad, rolls, cakes and beverages to the delicious meal.

The meeting’s program was a guided overview of the planned projects and activities over the next twelve months as noted in the club’s newly printed yearbook. The educational exhibit was a slide show presentation of project photos accompanied by chairmen’s summaries of their committees’ involvement in the community. President Jamie Trisler addressed a list of club business details and welcomed the newest members, Pam Fiegel, Dale Bowman and Sandy Stewart, into the club with personalized canvas tote bags and nametags.

Members Barbara McCormick, Conchita Richey and Jamie Trisler brought lovely flower arrangements that showed how to achieve balance and unity in mass floral designs. Many members brought bud vases of cut flowers from their home gardens to promote discussion of different growth habits. The horticulture hint of the month is that now is the best time to divide or transplant Louisiana irises. The gardening tip acknowledged the National Garden Club theme of “Plant America”. The club extends this notion to “Plant Gonzales” with flower beds at the Jambalaya Park and Kidz Kove. Besides adding beauty to the environment, the intent is to inspire citizens to improve the landscapes of their homes and businesses.

The Gonzales Garden Club has been federated by the Louisiana Garden Club Federation and the National Garden Clubs since 1961.
