Tents set up outside Chick-fil-A during the First 100 event.

Chick-fil-A welcomed guests to the new location on Highway 30 on Thursday morning. The Gonzales location is now officially open for business, and they kicked off the grand opening in a big way.

Chick-fil-A is famous for their First 100 event, which takes place every time a new location opens. The celebration includes games and food for those who camp out in the parking lot overnight to be one of the first one hundred customers through the door. Those that make it win free Chick-fil-A for a year, or 52 chicken sandwich meals. Just over 50 people camped out overnight to win the prize.

One activity during the event was stuffing backpacks full of school supplies. Teams competed to see who could stuff the most bags in the shortest time. One hundred forty backpacks were then donated to St. Amant Primary. Principal Paisley Morgan was on hand to receive the donation, which she said will make a huge difference for a lot of students. She thanked the First 100 contestants for their part and the company for making the donation.

"The work you did today is going to put a lot of smiles on a lot of kids' faces, and we really appreciate your hard work and the generosity of Chick-fil-A," said Morgan.

Chick-fil-A is more than just a company. It's a community partner. Owner Cody Salamone said this is all part of their mission to give back to the people they serve. An Ascension Parish resident himself, he said they were thinking about the impact of the flood and how many people are still recovering. That's why he wanted to do what he could to help.

"If there's a way we could serve the community in capacity, we wanted to do it," said Salamone. "So we dreamed up the idea of the school supplies, and we thought it would be a fun way to celebrate with our customers."

Salamone said his 95 employees live right here in the community as well. Those employees are ready to satisfy your craving for Chick-fil-A every day of the week, except Sundays of course.
