Ascension Funeral Home hosts Candlelight remembrance service

By Halen Doughty

Ascension Funeral Home will host the fourth annual Candlelight remembrance service for families in the community on December 5 at 7 p.m. It's a night of hope and remembrance to honor the memory of lost loved ones during the holiday season.

Managing Funeral Director Pete Cole said every family they served during 2017 will get an invitation to the event. But he noted it's open to all families in the parish, no matter who helped with their loved one's funeral arrangements.

Cole said more than twenty people attended the first remembrance service four years ago. By the second year, attendance had doubled to more than forty people. Last year saw a dip that Cole credits to the flood, and this year he's hoping to see at least forty people at the service, if not more. Cole said they hold this event every year during the holiday season because it can be a difficult times for families who have lost a loved one.

"It gives encouragement and hope to help families through the holidays," said Cole. Associate Pastor Ken Spivey of Healing Place Church in Baton Rouge will lead prayers, and Deacon Brent Duplessis of St. Jean Vianney Catholic Church in Baton Rouge will deliver a message of hope. Cole and his wife Deidra will offer messages of joy and peace. Refreshments will be served, and Christmas music will be played through the memorial service that celebrates the lives of those lost throughout the year. Families will leave with an inspiring story about Christmas in Heaven.
