Bishop Announces Special Collection

The Diocese of Baton Rouge will be holding a special collection during all Masses the weekend of Dec. 9-10, 2017, to benefit St. Joseph Abbey and Seminary, Bishop Robert W. Muench has announced in a letter. St. Joseph College, the largest Catholic seminary college in the United States, sustained heavy flood damage in March 2016 estimated in the millions of dollars. Thirty buildings on campus received at least two feet of water, and repairs are ongoing. The special collection for the abbey will take the place of the annual collection for retired religious, to whom the diocese has been very generous. Bishop Muench is now calling on the faithful to extend that generosity to the seminary, which has supplied the Gulf South area with priests for more than 125 years, including most of our own diocesan priests. “In order for the monks of the abbey to continue their mission of forming seminarians for the priesthood, they will need the generous help of the people of the Dioceses of Louisiana,” said Bishop Muench.
