Ascension ranked on 100 fastest-growing list

Staff reports

The U.S. Census Bureau has released estimates on the 100 fastest-growing home construction markets in the country since 2000, and Ascension Parish easily made the list.

The bureau estimates that housing units in Ascension grew nearly 36 percent between the 2000 census and July 1, 2008. A total of 10,390 units were constructed in that time period, bringing the parish total to 39,538.

Ascension is the only Louisiana parish on the list, according to a release by parish government. Livingston Parish housing units grew by 29 percent, West Baton Rouge 15 percent and East Baton Rouge 11 percent.

Ascension growth is projected to continue into the future. An LSU study recently predicted the parish will go from an estimated population of nearly 110,000 to nearly 200,000 by 2030, making Ascension the state’s eighth-largest parish by population.

“Folks have been coming to Ascension Parish in large numbers for a long time and will continue to do so,” Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez said. “That’s why it’s imperative that we create guidelines for future development with the Ascension Parish Comprehensive Plan, for which we are in the process of getting public input.”

The parish recently wrapped up a series of three public meetings on the Comprehensive Plan and plans another series of similar meetings in October.
