Gov. Edwards, USDOL’s Nick Lalpuis, Secretaries among guests
The Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC), in association with the Louisiana Human Resources Development Institute (LHRDI), will host the 2019 Louisiana Labor Summit on March 20-22 at the New Orleans Marriott.
The Summit will offer a series of presentations, workshops and panel discussions aimed at enhancing and improving workforce solutions across the State of Louisiana, providing the opportunity for attendees to connect with business and government leaders, as well as education, labor, and workforce professionals.
The summit will also showcase dynamic plenary breakfast and lunch speakers, including Governor John Bel Edwards.
Of particular focus at the summit will be identifying and explaining the countless workforce-development tools available for all of Louisiana’s employers, both large and small, including the intricacies of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA), the benefits of Registered Apprenticeship, customized training and the Work Opportunity Tax Credit, methods to avoid worker misclassification, Six Sigma vs LEAN Management and more. Attendees also can earn continuing education units for Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) certifications, Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), legal, and additional updates on various labor laws and tax credits.
Other special guests featured on this year’s summit agenda include U.S. Dept. of Labor Regional Administrator Nick Lalpuis, Alabama Secretary of Labor Fitzgerald Washington, and Assistant Commissioner Hugh Bailey of New Jersey’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
Summit attendees also will hear from Ava Dejoie, Secretary of the Louisiana Workforce Commission. “I am excited that the LWC and LHRDI have created an opportunity for Louisiana’s business and government leaders and workforce professionals to connect in a very unique way,” Sec. Dejoie said. “Together, we can map a course for Louisiana’s workforce.”
Jerry Mike Chapman, LHRDI’s Executive Director, said the institute is excited to support the summit again this year. “LHRDI is proud to partner with the LWC to host the 2019 Louisiana Labor Summit. Guest speakers and panelists to lead discussions pertaining to best practices and workforce-development strategies include Dr. Kim Hunter Reed, Commissioner of Higher Education; Chip Kline, Chair of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority; Sec. Shawn Wilson, Department of Transportation and Development; Sec. Jimmy LeBlanc, Department of Corrections; and Sec. Don Pierson, Louisiana Economic Development.
