"I’m going to want to know how the rule makes someone a better person, and how it helps them grow in holiness. We care about the rules of someone if we are in a relationship with them."
Broken + Blessed was published on August 27, 2018 by Father Josh Johnson from the Holy Rosary Church.
On February 5, Fr. Johnson held a book signing and mass at Francois Bend in Gonzales. The mass was held before the signing, with both residents and guests from outside of Francois attending. One topic he touches base on is relationships.
"Relationships' before rules are important," Fr. Johnson said. If I’m in a relationship with someone, I will reverence whatever rule they may have and care about it. I’m going to want to know how the rule makes someone a better person, and how it helps them grow in holiness. We care about the rules of someone if we are in a relationship with them."
During his high school age, Johnson felt he didn't have very meaningful relationships with his friends and wanted to go beyond the surface level. He prayed to Jesus to put new people in his life, and so He did.
"I didn't know Jesus at all for a while, and that was a struggle for me," Johnson said. "These new friends though, went to worship. So I would join them in services. Eventually, I too encountered Jesus."
Johnson’s mother was a strong Catholic, so he and his brother were both raised that way instead of Methodist, which is what his father was.
Another experience Johnson talks about in Broken + Blessed is his encounter with a man at a bar. The man told Johnson that he believes the Catholic church is a corrupt institution, and that priests are the most corrupt of people.
"When I encounter these situations, I just make an effort to pray," Johnson said. "I asked the Holy Spirit to give me words to say. I then asked him to pray for me. I actually, eventually saw him a few months down the line again. He got back into the church and started accepting sacraments again."
The whole point of the book was to write to his generation while also answering questions about concerns that the generation may have about God and the Catholic church.
Johnson also discusses the nature of prayer and challenges of it. He shares powerful stories of his own faith journey. The book is $14.99 and can be found at https://shop.ascensionpress.com/products/broken-and-blessed-an-invitation-to-my-generation.
