“Louisiana's school counselors go above and beyond for our students and their families, even as the job of counseling becomes more complex and challenging."
Gov. John Bel Edwards proclaimed February 4-8, 2019, as School Counseling Week in Louisiana to recognize the critical role that school counselors have in the education of our children and the formation of their futures.
The governor’s proclamation coincides with National School Counseling Week.
“Louisiana’s school counselors go above and beyond for our students and their families, even as the job of counseling becomes more complex and challenging. The tremendous work that these highly-trained, dedicated professionals do every day prepares our children for academic, career and social success,” Gov. Edwards said. “Donna and I are especially proud that our daughter is among this incredible group of educators who are always willing to assist our students. If you know a school counselor, be sure to thank them for the important job they’re doing, and join us in showing how much we appreciate what they do for our schools and communities.”
Louisiana's school counselors are vital members of the education team that help students explore and develop their strengths, talents, and abilities. Comprehensive counseling programs are an integral part of the educational process, and research shows that students who work with school counselors are more likely to apply to college.
In the 2016-2017 school year, Louisiana's student-to-counselor ratio was 1:305 for all grades and 1:234 for grades 9-12. The American School Counselor Association recommends a student-to-counselor ratio of 1:250.
School counselors in Louisiana are required by law to hold a Master's degree in guidance and counseling from a regionally accredited institution or a master's degree with the equivalent hours and courses in school counseling. Counselors must hold or be eligible to hold a valid Louisiana teaching certificate except for ancillary counselor certification and must have three credits in a supervised practicum in a school setting.
