Martin Luther King Celebration

The annual Martin Luther King Celebration will be held Monday January 21, at the Christian Assembly Full Gospel Church, 42158 Hwy 941. The celebration will begin at 7 p.m. and will feature Rev. Chris Butler as guest speaker, guest soloist Ms. Marcella Ratcliff, and renowned musical group "Authentically Anointed." Everyone is invited to join in honoring the legacy of Dr. King.

Sunshine Bridge Closure

Starting Saturday, January 19 at 6 a.m., the LA 70: Sunshine Bridge will be closed until Monday, January 21, at 5 a.m. This closure is necessary for the repair and replacement of structural components of the bridge related to the emergency repair project. For the duration of this closure, a detour route will be set up for motorist. Those traveling on LA 70 West Bound will turn onto LA 3125 South to LA 3123 South to cross the Veterans Memorial Bridge to LA 3127 North to LA 70. Those Traveling on LA 70 East Bound will turn onto LA 3127 South to LA 3123 North to cross the Veterans Memorial Bridge to LA 3125 North to LA 70.

Dancing for A Cause 2019

ALL STAR YEAR. 2019 is our 10th year anniversary. To ensure another successful year at The Arc of East Ascension’s Dancing For A Cause Event. Citizen of the Year

The Donaldsonville Area Chamber of Commerce is now accepting written nominations for its Citizen of the Year award. The winner will be announced at the annual Chamber Banquet. This award is given for civic, religion, political, social or any other field of endeavor deemed outstanding. Nominations must be signed by the person submitting the nomination. AARP Driver Safety Class

St. James Lutheran Church will host an AARP Driver Safety Class on Thursday, February 7 from 1 to 5 p.m. for anyone holding a valid Louisiana Drivers License. The class will be in the church located at 1415 E. Highway 30 in Gonzales. The class is geared to seniors, and drivers 55 and older may qualify for a three-year auto liability insurance discount upon completion. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for non-members which must be paid by check or money order upon arrival. NO CASH CAN BE ACCEPTED. All participants must bring their Driver’s License, a ballpoint pen, a highlighter, and anything they want to eat or drink. AARP members must also bring their membership cards. AC Extravaganza

Ascension Catholic's Dinner & Auction Extravaganza will be held on Saturday, February 9 at the High School Gym. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with appetizers and cocktails. Main meal will be served at 6:15 p.m., with an auction beginning at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $50.00 (includes drinks/alcohol). Meet The Gators

On Sunday, February 17 at 2 p.m. in the SAHS Gold Dome, the SAHS Athletic Department and the SAHS Athletic Booster Club will present "Meet the Gators," a Winter Sports Review and Spring Sports Kick-Off Dinner and presentation. Free Women's Self-Defense Workshop

A FREE Women's Self-Defense Workshop will be held Sunday, February 3 from 2-5 p.m. at USA Academy of Martial Arts 40017 Hwy 42, Prairieville, LA 70769 (next to Rouse's) It is a FREE hands-on, practical self-defense class for women and (also teens, accompanied by their parent or guardian). This is not a karate class and no martial arts experience is required. “The Brides of La Baleine”

The historical “Brides of La Baleine,” ancestors of many French people in Louisiana, will be discussed by Randall Ladnier, an authority on Gulf Coast and lower Mississippi Valley genealogy and history. The book, “Brides of La Baleine”, authored by Ladnier, in addition to the history, contains genealogies of those brides who founded large families in Mississippi, Illinois, and Louisiana. TangerKIDS Grant

TangerKIDS Grant Program, an initiative designed to award grant money to schools within the communities of Tanger Outlet Centers nationwide, has officially opened its call for entries within the Gonzales community. The TangerKIDS Grant Program was designed to satisfy the specific funding needs of local schools – from the implementation of school-wide programs, to rebuilding equipment and academic materials inventories, to supporting athletic or band programs. Medieval Fun!

Medieval history included kings, queens, knights and castles. Come celebrate Medieval technology at Ascension Parish Library in Donaldsonville, by building a catapult with popsicle sticks and learning the science behind it, then, color your very own dragon and watch it fly! 931 Lane Closures

The Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development advises motorists that there will be intermittent lane closures involving the intersection of LA 44 at LA 931/Germany Road on Thursday, January 17. These closures are necessary in order for the contractor to turn on the new signal at this intersection. The closures will take place between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Flaggers and appropriate signage will be present in order to direct traffic. No oversized loads greater than 10’ wide will be allowed through the construction zone during these intermittent lane closures.

LYAC January Meeting

Louisiana's Legislative Youth Advisory Council (LYAC) is set to meet on Saturday, January 19 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the Louisiana Municipal Association in Baton Rouge. LYAC members will discuss their ideas and plans to propose legislation at the upcoming legislative session. Among their ideas are legislation relative to adoption medical records and school safety. Career Service Award

Winners of the 60th annual Charles E. Dunbar, Jr., Career Service Award, presented by the Louisiana Civil Service League were announced January 14. This award named for the founder of the League and co-author of the original Civil Service Law in Louisiana is presented to employees in a classified merit system who have distinguished themselves by service over and above the call of duty. Bradley R. Brandt of Prairieville, Louisiana, Director of Aviation, Department of Transportation and Development, is one of 12 honorees.

LA 22 Lane Closures

No oversized loads greater than 10’ wide will be allowed through the construction zone during these intermittent lane closures. Polar Plunge

Special Olympics Louisiana and local Louisiana Law Enforcement Officers will host the 10th Annual Polar Plunge. The event will begin on Saturday, February 16, 2019, 10 a.m. at Cabela’s, 2200 W. Cabela’s Parkway, Gonzales, LA 70737. Everyone is invited to come and take the plunge into the cold water for a bare minimum of $50.00! Costumes are encouraged and the more money you raise the better! The FUNdraiser will end once all participants have taken the plunge!
