Gonzales branch library to host friendly competition

One Leadership Ascension team is making an effort to enhance the Ascension Parish Libraries with a fun, new learning tool known as littleBits.

The educational "toy" (dare we say) is like Legos that you can build a moving robot from.

"Children can come use their imaginations, build a robot, build a R2D2, build doorbells, and it's reusable building blocks," Project Manager Karen Hatcher said.

But such a cool thing comes with a hefty price tag. One box or kit runs about $300, according to a librarian. However, a littleBits Pro Library costs about $5,000 dollars. That is why currently only the Gonzales library has any inventory.

"Our particular group has decided to fund a project for the library to put electronic building blocks into each one of the four libraries," Hatcher said.

The goal for the project is $20,000. Hatcher said hey are about $1,000 short.

"The library is very excited to have this funding, and the Greater Baton Rouge Realtors Association has given us funds, and one of the realtors has personally given us some funds," Hatcher said. "Of course, we raised money from other entities."

Moreover, the Gonzales branch library is kicking off the fun early. At 10 a.m. on April 7 the littleBits building blocks will be presented and demonstrated to the public. Then, on April 21 at 10 a.m. the Gonzales branch will host a friendly littleBits competition. It is designed for 2nd graders and above. Registration is required in advance. Each team must consist of a parent, teacher, or librarian sponsor with an active library card and between five and ten participating children.

This Leadership Ascension Project is sponsored by BASF, the Greater Baton Rouge Association of Realtors, Methanex, A Better Mail Service, Ascension Federal Credit Union, and the Jambalaya Festival Association.

Lastly, it might not be too late to help them reach their fundraising goal. From the project group: "If you’d like to help inspire our next generation of engineers, scientists and inventors please email A Little Bit of Steam at littlebitsascension@gmail.com."
