Local officials cut the ribbon on the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office Substation and 911 Center Friday. State representatives, councilmen, and public safety officials were on hand for the grand opening at the two-building complex on Airline Highway.

Sheriff Jeff Wiley thanked everyone who was involved in bringing this new facility to life, including the taxpayers whose tax dollars made the substation possible.

Parish President Kenny Matassa said it's a great day in Ascension Parish. He called it a testament to the hard work of Wiley and said it's all about keeping residents safe.

"The people should really feel safe and be very glad that Jeff Wiley's our sheriff," Matassa said.

Gonzales Mayor Barney Arceneaux echoed that sentiment saying the sheriff must be thrilled to have the new center and especially the people who will be working there to have a nice, safe complex equipped with everything they need to protect citizens.

Furthermore, bunks, showers and a small kitchen make it possible for dispatchers to remain on site in the event of a hurricane, meaning there will never be a lapse in response time at the station. Dispatchers at the center will answer 911 calls for agencies throughout the parish, including APSO and the Gonzales Police Department.

Chief Deputy Bobby Webre touted the work of the men and women on the force, saying brick and mortar buildings will never answer 911 calls. He praised the hard work and dedication of the deputies and dispatchers.
