Ascension Parish Government is finalizing plans for reburial of caskets and vaults displaced by the catastrophic August 2016 flooding. Parish officials have begun notifying families or next-of-kin for those caskets that have been positively identified, and this process make take several days. There are a number of remaining caskets and vaults that are unidentified at this time. It is important for family members of the deceased to contact Parish officials in order to work to identify caskets and vaults.
The first step family members need to take after identifying your loved ones grave as affected, is to register with FEMA for individual assistance to pay for reburial costs. Only one family member should register. If possible, it will be better if that family member has not already applied for individual assistance for residential home damage or rental assistance since maximum assistance amounts may apply.
A meeting will be held, Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 5:30 pm at the Ascension Parish Governmental Complex, 1024 E. Ascension Complex Blvd., Gonzales, for family members of those in disturbed graves to register with FEMA representatives and sign the appropriate paperwork. Parish officials will also detail the plan for reinterment moving forward and will continue to work with local and state agencies to accomplish returning all caskets that were retrieved during the historic flooding to their proper locations.
If you have a family member buried in one of the below listed cemeteries, verify if their particular grave was disturbed including if their casket or vault is out of place or if the lid to their vault is unsealed or displaced. If so, or if you have any questions, contact Meredith Conger in the Ascension Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness at (225) 621-8360.
