SORRENTO — Authorities are investigating a Monday evening accident between a southbound freight train and a pickup truck.

It appears that the truck tried to cross the Kansas City Southern rail line at La. 22, Ascension Parish sheriff's deputies said.

Sheriff's Chief Deputy Bobby Webre said the train hit the pickup, which was pulling a utility trailer holding lawn equipment, around 6 p.m. in Sorrento as the truck was headed northwest on La. 22 toward Airline Highway.

The pickup driver, who has not yet been identified, suffered non life threatening injuries to the head and was taken by helicopter to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.

The La. 22 railroad crossing has flashing warning lights but no arms to block traffic when a train is approaching.
