Most of the meals you cook are dishes that you grew up with.  I don’t remember eating shepherd’s pie as a kid but I was raised on fried fish, red beans and bologna.  We cook shepherd’s pie now.  Most times I’ve eaten shepherd’s pie it’s a little different every time.  It was created from people using leftover dishes or whatever you have handy.  Just put everything in one pan and bake it.  My wife Leslie cooked a good one the other night.  This is what she put in it.

INGREDIENTS

2 lbs ground meat (browned and drained)

1 onion chopped

1 green bell pepper chopped

1 tbls minced garlic

1 envelope brown gravy mix (with water)

Cajun seasoning

1 can sweet peas

1 can sliced carrots

1 lb Velveeta cheese

1 small box instant mashed potatoes (cook by directions on box)

DIRECTIONS

Preheat oven to 300 degrees.  In a large skillet-sauté meat, onions, bell pepper and garlic over medium heat till onions are tender.  Add gravy and Cajun seasoning to taste.  Add drained peas and carrots and let cook for 15 minutes.  Taste. Spoon mixture into a large casserole dish.  Slice Velveeta cheese and layer on top of mixture. Spread mashed potatoes over cheese.  Bake 35 to 45 minutes until meat is bubbling and potatoes are brown.
