Methanex's Technical Department and community members gathered on May 24 to refurbish the Jackie Robinson Memorial Park in Geismar as part of a park community build day sponsored by the local chemical plant.

As part of Methanex's annual departmental team building activity, the engineering and lab department decided to refurbish the park in order to give back to the community, said Methanex Public Affairs Manager Meg Mahoney.

"Our CEO has asked all of our departments to focus those activities on giving back to the community and our technical team decided that since Jackie Robinson Park is so close to our site and needed some refurbishment, that that was going to be their team building and community service project," Mahoney said.

The day long project included painting the basketball backboards and rims, installing new metal nets for the basketball goals, re-striping the basketball court, adding new rubberized mulch under play structures, pressure washing bleachers and other structures, rebuilding the dugout, installing new swings and painting pavilions and concrete sport courts to include games such as four-square, hopscotch and twister.

Additionally, Scott's Miracle Gro donated mulch to cover every tree in the park, fertilized the baseball field and sent a crew to work alongside the volunteers, Mahoney said.

"We had great support from the Parish Recreation Department who worked with us all day removing limbs and filling holes around the site and making other repairs," Mahoney added. "The Sheriff’s Office also had deputies out to help with traffic. It was a great project and one we were pleased to provide to the Geismar community with."

Ascension Parish crews also volunteered time to help with the park by installing concrete floors and new fixtures in the bathrooms and removing downed trees and limbs throughout the park.

“The work that Methanex and these companies have done is phenomenal,” said President Kenny Matassa. “The donated materials and labor bring Jackie Robinson Park back to its original condition. They have shown by hard work that they are committed to the community.”
