GONZALES – On Sept. 28, at the Gonzales regular council meeting, the day was proclaimed as STEM GEMS Day in Gonzales. Started by Alsie Dunbar, STEM GEMS was praised for its mentorship both through the proclamation, presented by Mayor Barney Arceneaux, and through commentary from members of city council.

The STEM GEMS Mentoring Program increases awareness in young girls and minority women regarding Science, Technology, Engineering and Math related careers with the objective to promote the interest of girls excelling in these careers through mentoring.

To date, Dunbar has mentored more than 50 girls with a high level of success in Ascension Parish. This year the program will be mentoring children from Gonzales Primary and  Pecan Grove Primary.
