The Orientation Night for the 2014 AHEC of a Summer program was held Thursday, May 22nd, at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Students chosen to participate are Alejandra Guerra, Chasity McKinney, and Kaleigh Vargas from East Ascension HS; Darius Carter from Ascension Christian HS; Brooklyn Gordon and Timi Wimberly from St. Amant HS;

Andrea Gathercole, Cole Gaudin, Mitchell Porche and Hannah Robnik from Dutchtown HS; and Christopher Carter from Louisiana School of Math and Science. Students from Dutchtown HS who were selected for the AHEC of a Summer program at Our Lady of the Lake are Maryn Cavalier, Katie Cloud, Ashley Larson, and Alexa Michel.

These students were selected on the basis of grades, a letter of recommendation, a written essay, and an interview. The program will be offered at St. Elizabeth Hospital and will be a collaboration of Central Louisiana Area Health Education Center (CLAHEC), Ascension Parish School Board, and Ascension Catholic High School.

These students will spend fifteen days observing health care professionals in action and exploring health career opportunities through research, observation, and hands-on experience as hospital volunteers. The student participants will observe the “team approach” in a rural medical facility, which encompasses health issues, patient care, job readiness skills, volunteer service, and post-secondary education requirements for health careers. Upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive ½ high school elective credit. The program supervisor from St. Elizabeth Hospital is Michelle DeSoto, and the program educator is Rory Fore.
