Meeting of the Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana

Is your surname Caballero, Cavallero, or Cavalier? Are you a descendant of Pedro Jorge Caballero who came to Louisiana in the late 18th century?

The Canary Islanders Heritage Society of Louisiana will meet on Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m. at the Louisiana State Archives Building on Essen Lane. Research findings on the family origins of Pedro Caballero will be presented.

Myer Epstein Bishop Scholarship Fund

The Myer Epstein Bishop Scholarship Fund is looking for applicants. Each year $1,000 is awarded to one graduating senior from Ascension Parish towards their first semester of college. Bishop was very community oriented and a believer in education. This is his family's way of memorializing him. American Legion Oratorical Scholarship Program

The American Legion Gautreau/Williams Post 81 of Gonzales is seeking high school and home school students, grades 9 through 12 to participate in the annual American Legion Oratorical scholarship program. Participants will speak on assigned topics of the U.S. Constitution. The purpose of these assigned topics is to test the speakers' knowledge of the subject, the extent of research, and the ability to discuss the topic as related to the basic principles of government under the Constitution. Participants will compete in state and national contests. Scholarship monies of: 1st place: $18,000 2nd place: $16,000 and 3rd place: $14,000 will be awarded to the national winners. The state will also award scholarship monies to the state winners.

The National contest will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana April 19-21, with travel expenses for the state winner and chaperone being provided by the American Legion.

Special needs youth summer

Applications for a summer vacation full of fun for special needs youth in the Ascension Parish area are now being accepted by members of the Gonzales Lions Club.

The Louisiana Lions Camp is located north of Leesville and will open Sunday June 2. There will be

• One week session for youth with pulmonary disorders ages 5-15

• Two one-week sessions for mentally challenged ages 8-19

• Two one-week sessions for youth with diabetes ages 6-14

• Two one-week sessions for visual, hearing, and orthopaedically impaired youth ages 7-19

There is no cost to the parents for the campers to stay. All requests for summer camp are handled locally by Lions, and each applicant requires a Lion sponsorship.

Krewe of Diversion Mardi Gras Boat Parade

The St. Jude "Krewe of Diversion" Annual Mardi Gras Boat Parade will be start at noon, on Saturday, Feb. 2. The parade, featuring Grand Marshal Clif Nickens, starts by the Hwy. 22 bridge and ends at Manny's Bar. First place boat and costumes will be judged. There will be food and T-shirts sold all day and Manny's with bands playing.

Registration is, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., on Friday, Feb. 1. Dinner will be served. The cost is $35 per boat with checks payable to LFACC. All proceeds will go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
