The Ascension Parish 2012 Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day is slated for Saturday, May 12 at the Lamar-Dixon Expo Center, parish officials said.

“Each year the amount of residents showing up at the Household Hazardous Materials Collection Day event continues to grow,” Ascension Parish President Tommy Martinez said. “People are more aware now than ever about the importance of our environment and how we need to dispose of these items properly.”

Ascension Parish Government Environmental Supervisor Terance Irvin said the household hazardous materials collection day event will take place from 9 a.m. till 1 p.m. The expo center is located at 9039 St. Landry Road in Gonzales. Irvin said the collection day is for Ascension Parish residents only and that a valid ID will be required.

Irvin said more than 1,200 cars showed up with materials at last September’s collection day event, which nearly doubled the count from the event held in the fall of 2010.

Collection numbers from last year’s event show parish residents brought in an estimated total of nearly 54,000 pounds or 27 tons of hazardous materials, compared to 40,000 pounds or almost 20 tons collected in 2010.

“It’s fair to say this event is working and parish residents most definitely want it,” Irvin said. “The proof is in the numbers.”

Materials to be accepted include a limit of five automobile tires, car and golf cart batteries, cell phones and batteries, electronic equipment, fluorescent bulbs, gasoline, oil, antifreeze, home and garden chemicals, household batteries, ink and toner cartridges, latex and oil-based paints, thinners, varnishes, scrap metal in small quantities, rechargeable batteries, televisions, small propane tanks and appliances for scrap metal. They will also accept telephone systems, video cameras and DVR’s, computer accessories, Xboxes, PlayStations and Wii boxes, fax machines, monitors and printers.

Irvin said they will not accept explosives, radioactive materials, medical waste, asbestos, high school lab waste, commercial and governmental facility waste, paper, magazines, newspaper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic and glass, hurricane debris or woody waste.

Irvin said the event is sponsored by Ascension Parish Government, Keep America Beautiful, Keep Louisiana Beautiful, Keep Ascension Beautiful, Louisiana DEQ, Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office, Gonzales Fire Department, Ascension Parish School Board, Shell Chemical, LeBlanc’s Payless Food Store, Acadian Waste, Acadian Ambulance and EATEL.
