The National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society, Louisiana announced that registration will be open now until September 23 for the 2011 Bike MS Louisiana. The Bike MS Louisiana will take place October 1 and 2.

Those who register by September 23 will have a fee of $40, with an increase to $50 the day of the event. People can participate in Bike MS individually or as a team. Volunteers are also needed.

The Bike MS Louisiana is a two-day fundraising event benefiting more than 3,000 individuals in Louisiana living with MS. In 2010, more than 1,050 dedicated riders raised more than $593,000.

Cyclists are required to raise at least $250. The required minimum fundraising total of $250 is due when rider packet is picked up either during early packet pick up September 19-23 or September 30 or the day of the event, October 1. Riders have until November 1 to qualify for fundraising prizes.

“Volunteers are the backbone of this event,” said Becky Pennington, Louisiana vice president. “Volunteers can help with planning starting months before the ride, setting-up at various locations throughout the weekend, registering cyclists, monitoring the route, managing snack stations, cleaning up or cheering on the cyclists. There is a place for everyone’s time and talents.”

More than 1,100 cyclists are expected to come out and help raise the goal of $650,000. Funds raised will support direct services and programs for more than 4,000 people with MS and their families in Louisiana and for national MS research to find a cure for this chronic disease of the central nervous system.

Additional confirmed sponsors of this year’s ride are: Pfizer, Molly LLC, John Folse & Co., Peoples Health, Lakeview Regional Medical Center, Coca Cola, Nola.com, Elmwood Fitness Center, Health & Fitness, Kentwood, UPS and Whole Foods.
